Where are the proposed English communication labs in the higher secondary schools in TN now?
This seems to be the question on the minds of many teachers, educationists etc. In the month of August in this year, an announcement was made regarding starting English language communication labs for the students in the higher secondary schools across Tamil Nadu. The objective behind this was to help the students to master the English language plus to increase their employment chances. The bitter truth is that till now this has not taken shape.
The teachers at the Government HSS in Vellore mentioned that they have heard about this superb proposal by the TN government but no action has been taken till now. It must be noted that the teachers were of the view that the communication labs must be started at the middle school levels so that the students would have enough time to master the English language by the time they reach the end of their school career.
The TN government must sort out many issues before starting the communication labs for the students. This was brought out by Mr. SN. Janardhanan, president of TN Vocational Teachers Kazhagam. There must be clarity about who would be handling these labs whether English teachers present in the schools or staff appointed by the TN government etc.
According to a communication trainer in Vellore, the use of headphone linked computer systems would help the students to understand the language in detail. He spoke about how it would be superb to allot one class every day in the middle school level and students must be allowed to talk in English regarding various subjects. By this the students would get used to the English language well.
He threw light about how Tamilians think in Tamil and then speak in English and how the students need to understand English first.
