The TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has allotted an amount of Rs 25 cr and have employed scientists from IIT-M to prepare a DPR or detailed project report. All this to make the Koyambedu market carbon neutral. It is well known that Koyambedu market is Asia`s biggest perishable goods market. It is now said that the DPR would be submitted in another 3 months and the project would be over in 3 years.

There are many issues at this important market such as poor solid waste management and poor sanitation etc. Here, the stray cattles roam amidst rotting veggies and banned plastics etc creating issues to many.

To find suitable solutions to the issues at the Koyambedu market, a team has been working under the professor of civil engineering of IITM Indumathi  Nambi for 2 months.

Preparing an inventory of greenhouse gases:

It was later bought out by M. Jayanthi, chairwoman of TNPCB that one of the first steps of the decarbonisation project would be preparing an inventory of greenhouse gases present inside the market. Biomethanisation plants, rain water harvesting, solar roofing etc would be brought in the market complex and renewable energy would be promoted.

Soon, a 15000 sq ft innovation hub would be set up inside the market and pilot models would be displayed. To showcase their innovations and success models, startups would be invited. There would be the setting up of a few initiatives inside the market and it would include bio-toilets, e-vehicle usage to transfer commodities, flood mitigation measures etc.  It is learnt that the project at the Koyambedu market complex would be from CMDA`s Rs 20 cr modernisation project.

It was revealed by Indhumathi Nambi that all types of waste that are generated at the market cannot be put into the biomethanation plant. She hinted that civic and banana waste cannot be converted into biogas. The rooftop solar would not be enough to provide more power for the cold storage. Solutions would be found for all these issues present at the market. According to M. Jayanthi, it would be a model for implementing circular economy principles at a large-scale market complex.
