There are no plans to close down the Amma canteens now in Chennai. The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would be revamping these Amma canteens soon.

The menu at these canteens would be improved and for that the suggestions from many people would be considered. This was according to the Chennai Mayor Priya. She hinted that rajma and chana would be added to the menu and the menu would be different in different areas.

Thirty five Amma canteens in Chennai have been identified as poor performing now by the GCC. This is out of a total of 409 Amma canteens. In these 35 canteens there are fewer than 100 visitors per day and the revenue is less than Rs 500.

These poor performing Amma canteens would be shifted to some other busier locality in Chennai. She concluded that the aim would be to achieve a daily revenue of Rs 1000. It must be recalled that in 2013, Amma canteens were launched in Chennai to provide food at subsidized rates. An amount of  Rs 100 cr was received from the TN government at that time. As a result, there has been poor maintenance and buildings, mixies, grinders, fans etc have got damaged.

For improving these canteers, Rs 120 cr was sought from the TN govt and for this Chenai Mayor has sent a proposal to the government.  There are 4500 people on the rolls for these canteens but just 3300 staff would be enough to run these canteens. This was as per the GCC.

Soon, streamlining of the Amma canteen staff based on the requirements would be done and this was as per the deputy mayor Mr. Mahesh Kumar. To keep an eye on the procurement of the food and billing following the allegations of corruption by canteens staff, GCC would also be appointing revenue officers.
