The Tamil Nadu government has already proposed to link Kilambakkam with metro trains and with a new suburban railway station. Soon, Kilambakkam in Chennai would become the next hotspot of development. It is known to us already that in Kilambakkam the third bus terminus would be coming up.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or CMDA has been constructing a bus terminus at this locality on the sprawling 88 acres of land. An amount of Rs 415 cr is being spent for this new bus terminus here. After completion, this new bus terminus would have the capacity to house 2350 buses including private  omni buses also. By the upcomig  Pomngals festival in january 2023, the works would be completed here and this was according to Mr. S. Muthuswamy, state housing and urban development minister

The traffic congestion at the present Koyambedu bus terminus or CMBT has been creating many issues. To provide a solution for this, a new bus terminus is being constructed at Kilambakkam. This new bus terminus would also have buses that would be going to several southern districts in Tamil Nadu.  As the new bus terminus would be coming up in Kilambakkam, the traffic congestion would become heavy here on the GST Road. To avoid this, CMDA and CUMTA have joined hands to build a new railway station at Kilambakkam. This railway station would be between Vandalur and Urapakkam railway stations and it would be linked with the multi modal hub.

To study the feasibility of constructing a railway station here and link the bus terminus and proposed railway station with a skywalk, tenders have been floated to appoint consultants. By this , the passengers would be able to move freely. At the authority meeting of CUMTA that took place recently, in-principle approval was issued to link Kilambakkam with Chennai airport and metro trains.

It was then brought out by an official that there was a proposal to build a flyover in front of the bus terminus for easy entering and exiting of the buses without creating issues for other vehicle movement on the GST Road. The superb piece of information is that there would be rapid growth at Kilambakkam and its nearby localities as it would be connected with bus, trains and metro trains etc.

The development near Kilambakkam would also get boosted because the TN government is allowing higher floor space index or HFSI along the major roads, suburban railway lines and metro corridors etc.  Mr. KP. Subramaniam, former professor of Anna University expressed his concern that Kilambakkam would become highly congested and it might not witness rapid growth like Koyambedu.

He threw light on how when the Koyambedu bus terminus was constructed it was the only bus terminus in Chennai at that time. Currently, there are de-centralised bus stands like Madhavaram, Kilambakkam and a proposed bus terminus at Thirumazhisai also. He wanted the TN govt to spread development to other important cities like Coimbatore, , Madurai etc to avoid the concentration of the population in Chennai.

As per Mr. KM. Sadhanand, Association of Professional Town Planners it was clear that there is no futuristic thinking while implementing such projects. He spoke about how the planning authority must forecast developments and include them in the master plans. He added that the lands must be reserved near the new bus stand for future requirements.
