There is now uncertainty prevailing over the construction of 4 flyovers on the Maduravoyal – Sriperumbudur stretch in chennai. As a result of this, the motorists travelling to Sriperumbudur and beyond through Chennai-Bengaluru highway would face traffic snarls. It is now said that the traffic snarls would be there even after the 6 lane works get completed in 2023.

It is noteworthy that the state Highways department has undertaken the road widening work of the Maduravoyal- Sriperumbudur stretch into 6 lanes. This includes the construction of 4 flyovers on the busy junctions at Parivakkam, Nazarathpet, Thirumazhisai and Thandalam etc.

To ease the traffic congestion due to vehicles on the arterial stretch, the state Highways dept are executing works on the behalf of National Highways Authority of India or NHAI.

Following the TN government`s announcement of extending the metro rail services  upto Sriperumbudur and plans from NHAI to construct an elevated road from  Maduravoyal to Sriperumbudur, the works regarding the flyovers are hanging in balance now. By the month of March in 2023, the six laning works on the 24 km stretch would be completed. This stretch witnesses more than 2 lakhs passenger cars every day.

Now, studies are being conducted by NHAI for the need of the flyover. There are proposals for the elevated road and CMRL extension along the same stretch is known. For both the elevated road and for metro trains, studies are underway and this was  as per an officer.

The sources have mentioned that the construction of the flyover might come in the way of alignment of the proposed  elevated road and metro rail project. The completion of the study is now awaited.

No proposal has been received from the state highways dept for the deletion of the flyover works and this was mentioned by Savithri Devi, NHAI project director of the project implementation unit.
