The unchecked release of ballast water from the ships is threatening now!!
It is now said that the invasive South American mussel species is spreading through the Ennore creek and it might even wipe out the commercially important prawn species. This was as per a study by some fishermen belonging to the area. The fishermen have written to the state Wetland and Authority and fisheries dept asking for urgent and immediate intervention to stop the spread.
It is sensational to note that fishermen who conducted the study with the scientists and environmentalists etc have also written a paper on the subject. They also have plans to publish their study in a journal.
Mytella Strigata, the mussel species would spread over the river bottom and it would prevent prawns from grazing or burying themselves in the river sediment. Point is that the mussel species from South America is slowly wiping out locally prevalent yellow clams and green mussels etc.
