By the end of the month of March 2023, the new Pamban bridge construction would be completed. It is known that this bridge would connect Rameswaram with the mainland. For the completion of the project on time, the southern railways has engaged with RVNL the executive agency. This would be India`s first ever vertical lift railway sea bridge when completed and it would be sensational.
According to a statement, it was clear that till now 84% of the construction works have been completed. It is noteworthy that works on all the 333 piles, 101 pile cap and substructure and fabrication of all 99 approach spans have been completed. Seventy six girders out of ninety nine approach spans have been launched. Now, the fabrication of the vertical lift span girder is nearing completion.
There would be 99 spans of 18.3m length and one navigational span of 72.5m length and it would be 3m higher then the existing bridge. The horizontal width of this vertical lift railway sea bridge would be 72.5m for navigation. For the double line, the substructure of the bridge is being constructed and the navigational span would also have provision for double line.
The railways plan for electrification would be considered while designing the entire bridge that would include the navigational span too.
Electro-mechanical controlled systems:
It is superb to mention here that the new bridge would have electro-mechanical controlled systems in comparison to the present manual operation and control. These would be interlocked with the train controlled systems. This bridge would attract tourists from all over the world and would be a visual treat for the onlookers.
From 23rd December 2022 onwards, the rail traffic between Mandapam and Rameswaram has been suspended on the existing Pamban Bridge. This was due to the fact that a red alert was received from the monitoring system.
