The once considered never ending civic issues at the Thazhambur, a south chennai based nondescript suburban locality have come to a close now!!
It is superb to note that this locality in south Chennai has been full of activities in the last few months. There were many mass cleanliness drives and restoration of lake campaigns etc.
In April 2021, a report was made regarding the illegal dumping of garbage into the lake in the locality and some miscreants setting the garbage on fire creating pollution issues. In this scenario, NGT formed a panel to suggest workable solutions.
Ineffective solid waste management practices adopted by the local body here was confirmed by the team and thenTamil Nadu Pollution Control Board or TNPCB penalised it for violations. Accumulated waste was cleared by the state agencies and a short term action plan was developed also. Funded by the European Union, a MOU was signed between Thazhambur and International Urban and Regional Cooperation in the middle of 2021 to develop Thazhambur into a model village.
The main purpose of this was to implement the Waste to Energy project. From then on, many officers from various government departments have been making huge efforts to transform Thazhambur completely before the end of 2023.
Various measures taken are:
In the first step, separate bins were provided to the residents for separate dry and wet waste disposal. To collect the kitchen waste and e-waste separately from the residents, a local farm and recycling unit wwre roped in also.A new dumping site has been identified and to process the remaining solid waste a new micro composting plant would also be coming up soon.
With the help of an NGO, the Tamil Nadu govt organised tree plantation drives at the lake and now there are about 1000 trees around the lake. The photos that were submitted to the National Green Tribunal have clearly shown that ten lake vice city has turned green again and the migratory birds have come back to nest at the adjacent lands.
Later on, sewage treatment plants or STP were installed here to make sure that the sewage generated by the apartments were recycled before they were offloaded into the approved areas. It is true that currently 80% of the recycled water is being used for watering the gardens here. The residents here spoke about how they have been hiring tankers to remove untreated sewage. Last week,a judgement was reserved in this case by the NGT.
