Aadhaar enrollment is going on in Chennai for quite some time. On Monday things began to speed up as as the census department started collecting data from Sholinganallur residents for the National Population Register (NPR).
With Sholinganallur, the drive has reached nine out of the 15 zones under the corporation. The drive has been going on in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Kodambakkam, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Teyanampet, Anna Nagar, Ambattur and Adyar zones in the last few months. Thiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Valasaravakkam, Alandur and Perungudi zones are yet to be covered.
The officials of the Censor Department will visit each household and provide a KYR (Know Your Resident) form with the date, time and place of registration.
Residents can submit the biometric data for the NPR. Data collected by the NPR is sent to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for duplication and issue of Aadhaar number.
The project of the census department covers people above the age of five. An individual`s demographic details and biometric parameters fingerprints and iris images are collected and an Aadhaar number is issued. Aadhaar numbers will be linked to bank accounts to provide benefits under various schemes, including LPG subsidy.
