It was a year back a flyover was inaugurated at the busy Koyambedu in Chennai. The purpose was to decongest the highly congested JN High Road. Now even after a year, the inauguration of the flyover hasn`t solved the purpose for which it was built here.
It is noteworthy that the flyover exit towards Thirunamangalam is choked because of the fact that the buses from the Koyambedu omni bus stand and carts from flyover come and meet at the exit point. At the VR Mahal, the construction work regarding metro trains has been going on and this has decreased the road space to a huge extent. The above said traffic congestion at the exit point gets carried towards VR Mahal also sometimes.
The traffic during the peak hours would be there from 20min to 40min and this was as per some commuters heading from Vadapalani towards Thirumangalam. It was explained by an Ambattur resident that the buses coming from Koyambedu beneath the flyover were tailing each other and pushing the smaller vehicles to break at the point of exit.
As a result, there is very high traffic congestion on the flyover at Koyambedu. The flyover would have ended slightly farther close to the grade separator as per the original design of the flyover. The issues in land acquisition have shortened the flyover length.
It is shocking to note that on the opposite side there is hardly 200m for the vehicles travelling from Arumbakkam to enter the flyover. A car would need 400m to 500m to access a flyover ramp in those types of road intersections. The congestion has gotten worse due to the parking of many share autos at the bus stops.
Building flyovers would not reduce the traffic congestion as it would only shift the issue from one place to another place. This was according to Mr. R. Rengachari, transportation activist.
