The railways has been planning to launch a shorter version of semi high speed trains between the smaller cities where patronage would not be high for running a full fledged train. It is now said that  ICF or Integral Coach Factory  in Chennai would be making 8 car Vande Bharat or VB trains soon as a pilot project. The VB trains now have 16 coaches is known.

The design of 8 car VB trains would be done in such a manner that in the future it could be upgraded into 16 car trains and 24 car trains. This was as per some sources from railways.

The shorter version of Vande Bharat trains would not only cater to the routes connecting tier 2 cities like Madurai and Coimbatore etc but it would also speed up the delivery of rakes. It is learnt that the ministry of railways has already conveyed its intention to manufacture a shorter version of train to ICF and RDSO etc.

It was pointed out by an official from ICF that the design would be finalised and one rake would be manufactured as a pilot project and then standardisation would be done. Without compromising the comfort of the passengers too much, an attempt will be made to accommodate as many seats as possible in a coach. From across all zones, there is now a huge demand for the trains. It was thought that the patronage would be high on routes connecting major cities and that was the reason for launching 16 car trains.
