As there is a shortage of well qualified computer science engineering teachers now, the engineering colleges across TN have requested AICTE or All India Council for Technical education to relax norms and allow faculty from EEE, ECE branches etc to teach computer science engineering or CSE.
It was clear from the AICTE norms that only those with Ug and PG in the computer science related branches would be able to take classes for the CSE students. It must be recalled that in last year about half the students chose CSE, IT, AI and data science etc. Point is that very few students have opted for ME, MTech courses in CSE branches due to huge demand for BE/BTech graduates in the last few years.
The shocking piece of information is that the faculty shortage could be 20% to 30% in this year and it could be more in the next year because the colleges increase their intake in computer related branches due to high demand. It was explained by Mr. RN. Kishore, deputy secretary, Consortium of Self Financing Professional,Arts and Sciences colleges in TN. As per the principal from KCG College of Technology,P. Deiva Sundari, upto 50 percent of topics in CSE branch could be handled by the faculties from other departments.
She threw light on how topics like programming, AI and data science were maths and statistics based ones. The faculty members could be upskiled through several online courses that are available now. Increasing the salaries could also make more people take up CSE teaching jobs at the engineering colleges across TN.
The vice-chairman, Rajalakshmi Group of Institutions, Abhay Meganathan explained how the pay scales of computer science teachers must increase and by that more people would be attracted from the industry towards teaching. To take classes during the weekends, some engineering colleges are also hiring experts now from the industries.
