There is a surprising relation between sleep apnea and strokes!!

When the supply of blood to the part of the brain gets blocked, then we could get a brain attack or otherwise known as brain stroke. The stroke is a serious issue and it must be addressed immediately. Brain attack can also occur when blood vessels in the brain bursts. Surviving a stroke is very difficult and when a person survives a stroke then his or her brain would have got damaged badly.

It is worth mentioning that there are several factors responsible for strokes in a person such as high BP, high cholesterol, heart attack, family history, diabetes etc. Not many of us would know that sleep apnea could also result in strokes in us.

What is sleep apnea?

It refers to a condition where the breathing stops repeatedly and starts suddenly with loud snoring. It was revealed by Sleep Apnea Organisation that sleep apnea would occur in 70% of the patients after they were affected with strokes.There are also possibilities that sleep disordered breathing can precede strokes. Truth is that about 85% of those who have sleep apnea would not know that they have this condition in them. The experts have hence concluded that sleep apnea could also be a factor for brain strokes.

The 2 most common types of sleep apnea are obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Those with sleep apnea would show few common symptoms like loud snoring, stopping of breathing while sleeping, gasping for air, waking up with dry mouth, morning headaches, insomnia, hypersomnia, irritation and difficulty in paying attention while awake.

Various signs of strokes are trouble with speech and comprehension, numbness in face, arms, legs etc, vision issues, headaches, issues in walking etc.

How to reduce the risk of getting strokes?

Point is that we must know about the various risk factors of strokes like high BP, high cholesterol. diabetes etc  and these must be kept in control. It is essential to maintain a healthy weight and eat vegetables and fruits etc. Strokes risk can also be lowered by doing exercises regularly and quitting smoking and alcohol intake etc.
