In the recent Railway Budget, Rs. 58 Crores have been allotted for the resumption of the Railway Project linking 3 districts in the State of Tamil Nadu – Avadi-Sriperumpudhur-Guduvancherry.

It may be noted that this project, proposed quite long ago, had been shelved for several years!

With the rapid continuing growth of the Chennai Metro City, the suburban areas of the city - Thiruvallur District Avadi), Kanchipuram District (Sriperumpudhur), and Chengalpattu District (Guduvancherry) have also been growing by leaps and bounds every passing day! Over the last 10 years, there has been phenomenal growth in industries as well as red=silences in these areas! As such, to improve the infrastructure and basic amenities, Tambaram and Avadi have been elevated to Corporations.

As mentioned above, the growth has necessitated the requirement of other essential facilities such as roads, drinking water, and transport.

For the passengers as well as freight, it was announced that a railway track covering 60 km linking Avadi-Sriperumpudhur-Guduvancherry would be taken up!

The cost for this project was estimated at Rs. 639 Crores.  However, as sufficient funds were not allotted for this project, it was shelved!

Citizens from all fields were eagerly expecting the resumption time for this project! As such, extensive preparatory work for this project has been taken up in the year 2022! Tenders were floated by the Southern Railway for the project of the laying of a new track and associated works.

As the associated survey was being pursued, this project gained new life with the announcement in the Railways budget for the Financial Year 2023-24 Rs. 58 Crores has been allotted for this project thus redeeming the project!

Further, apart from the Avadi-Sriperumpudhur-Guduvancherry rail Link, the laying of track for Tindivanam-Thiruvannamalai and between Tindivanam-Nagari, and the track for Chengalpattu-Cuddalore via Mahabalipuram.

Expectations:

For the Avadi-Sriperumpudhur-Guduvancherry Project, a total of Rs. 865 Crores has been estimated. As Rs. 58 Crores have been allotted for the first phase of this project, it is expected that all the preparatory work will be expedited!

As the survey for the project is nearing completion, the land acquisition for the project, discussions with the land owners and provision of compensation for them, will be completed.

As compared to the total estimated cost of this project, only a tiny part has been providided currently!  If more funds are allotted, the project will get expedited!

In the areas of Sriperumpudhur and Prasadam, the residents as well as the industries depend on transport, they have been delighted as the project activities have been resumed and intensified!

The second Airport in Chennai Metro City will be set up in Parandur. As such, the residents of Kanchipuram expect that Kanchipuram MUST also be linked! Kanchipuram is a hugely popular tourist spot in the Religious and Cultural Centre and as such, presently, visitors/passengers have to reach this place by train via Chengalpattu!

As above, the residents of Kanchipuram desire and expect that iF railway tracks are laid up to Sriperumpudhur, it should be further extended up to Kanchipuram!
