Huge demand for arts & commerce courses now - Colleges in Chennai to start new courses in these streams!!

For the 2023-24 academic year, 36 arts and sciences colleges in Chennai under MU or University of Madras have applied to start new courses. It is learnt that most of these colleges have applied to start courses in commerce, computer science streams after taking into account the huge demand for these courses in the previous year.

In the future, there would be colleges in Chennai that would offer students B.Sc computer science with data science, B.Sc computer science with AI etc. It was found out that courses like B.Com general, Bcom finance and taxation, B. Com accounting and finance were having huge demand so these new courses would be started.

According to Mr. R. Rangarajan, Dean(incharge), College Development Council, MU,  the demand for data science has become huge now. He hinted that B.Com would be of huge demand. There would also be courses like BBA, BSC visual communication etc in the colleges and many colleges have applied for these. For the year 2023-24, MU has received 7 applications to start new colleges.

Vice-chancellor of MU, S. Gowri explained that last year just 4 applications were received and now 7 applications have been received. Before giving approval to these colleges, inspection of colleges, faculty members and facilities etc would be carried out.

It is noteworthy that now there are 133 colleges affiliated to the MU and 2 engineering colleges have applied to start new arts and science colleges. Truth is that there is now  a huge demand for liberal arts and commerce programmes. It was brought out by one of the applicants that by providing quality education it would be possible to attract more students.

Students prefer to study commerce courses in the branded colleges. This was as per Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi, career consultant. He concluded that more colleges would start arts and science courses in the future.
