The TN state government has started to construct U shaped flyovers at Taramani along OMR at a cost of Rs 110 crores to decongest traffic along IT corridors. The bitter truth is that the construction of the flyover here has not progressed much but it has worsened the commuters plight.
It must be noted that from December 2022 onwards one flyover at Indira Nagar in Adyar was supposed to be opened for the public use but the works are yet to be finished. In the beginning the authorities gave reasons like Coronavirus pandemic, Chess Olympiad and monsoon etc but now GCTP or Greater Chennai Traffic Police department`s permission is awaited to block the movement of the vehicles along one side of OMR to build girders.
It was later mentioned by an engineer from the Highways dept that once the traffic police allow diversions then all vehicles would be allowed to travel on just one side of OMR. There is also metro rail work that needs to be carried out simultaneously and it is now hoped that permission would be given by the traffic police soon.
To clear the underground utility lines, the dept must also get the approval from Metro water, Tangedco etc. There has been an issue wrt mobilising the labourers by the contractors in short notice.
According to a senior officer from the Highways dept it was clear that enough time must be given so that the work would be completed within the stipulated time. There are also other pending works like work along the other flyover at Tidel park junction plus construction of L shaped flyover at Madhya Kailash junction etc.
It was mentioned by a Taramani resident that now it takes 20 to 30 minutes to go to Adyar from Taramani due to many diversions and when traffic blocks get introduced then the situation would become worse.
