Information is gathered that the first lot of DRIVERLESS 3 COACHES TRAINS FOR METRO will arrive in Chennai Metro City before August 2024!
Presently, the Chennai Metro Rail Project – Phase 2 covering 118.9 km is in progress. As a part of this, driverless metro trains are planned to be operated in the section Poonamallee-Power House.
Metro Trains with 4 coaches are currently operated in the Metro Rail Project, Phase-1.
In the Phase-2 project execution, Metro Rails with 3 coaches will be operated.
In this regard, the senior officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) shared:
"Once the proposed driverless coaches arrive at Chennai Metro City from Sri City, they will be taken to the Poonamallee Depot where the Testing and Maintenance Centre for the trains are being constructed.
The coaches will arrive as single units and will be linked here as a complete unit. Testing will be carried out on various aspects – The pulling test, the performance of the braking system, the overall unit, the passengers` information system, etc.
Test-run will be conducted on a testing track in the Poonamallee Depot.
Once the signalling system is ready, linking of the coaches will be done and thorough tests will be conducted again to check for any defects! This will continue for 10-12 months!"
It has also been announced that the trains presently operating in the First Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project CANNOT BE RUN ON THE TRACKS CONSTRUCTED FOR THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROJECT! The officials explained that the trains for the second phase are different in shape, size, controlling and signalling systems and as such, the trains operating on Pase-1 CANNOT BE OPERATED ON THESE TRACKS FOR PHASE-2!
It is further learnt that the colour and shape/appearance of the driverless trains are yet to be decided.
The section Poonamallee-Power House covers 26.1 km. FURTHER, CMRL HAS DECIDED TO OPERATE 26 DRIVERLESS TRAINS IN THIS SECTION!
