If you are of the view that only people in the cities get diabetes issue, then you might be wrong!!

People in the villages etc follow traditional lifestyle such as intense physical activity & access to nutrient rich foods etc. This doesn`t assure them good health as there are more incidences of diabetes getting reported from the rural places in Tamil Nadu.

In India, especially in the more socio economic states like TN many peopke have diabetes now.

Recently, a study was conducted and it was found that when compared to the cities in Tamil Nadu rural places or villages in TN had more number of diabetes affected people.

The adult obesity rate in Tamil Nadu the year 2010 was 5.6% and in 2016 it was 6.9%.

The prevalence rate of diabetes in the cities have reached close to the saturation point or 25percent. Those who are prone to get diabetes have got the issue now and any further increase in the prevalence would not be possible.

The villages or rural places in the state have been getting more urbanized. Truth is that the lifestyles in villages are steadily changing into those present in urban places.

The study known as TREND  or Telemedicine Project for Screening Diabetes and it`s Complications in Rural Tamil Nadu was organised by MDRF or Madras Diabetes Research Foundation along with Scotland based University of Dundee. Since the year 2018, the researchers have screened more than 8000 people above 18 years from approx 25 villages in Cheyyur taluk in TN.

The study has brought to light that the prevalence of diabetes in the Kancheepuram district has increased from 4.9% in 2006 to 13.5% in 2023. In Chennai city, the prevalence in diabetes has increased in the same period but the speed of increase was slower.

In the recent study, 18.2% of those who were screened had prediaetes in them. An Increase from 14.6% in 2006. It is worthy to note that about one third people either had diabetes or had more chances of developing it.
