A combination of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus or Diabesity is present now in atleast 3 out of 10 adults belonging to Chrennai. This has caught the attention of many. The shocking piece of information is that this Diabesity would increase the risk of heart diseases, strokes and kidney failure etc. There are more chances of women getting Diabesity when compared to men. It is brought out that in those persons who are above the age of 60, there are more chances of getting this issue as the risk is 5 times in them compared to 18 to 29 age group persons.

It is now said that the above findings were a part of ongoing health surveillance study in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka etc, carried out by Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. The study has been funded by the United Kingdom`s National Institute for Health and Care Research.

From 34 randomly chosen wards of GCC,  the researchers selected 1138 adults for the health surveillance study. This was carried out between May 2018 and September 2021. There were 683 women who took part in the study. It must be noted that 26.3% of those women had fasting glucose level (diabetes test) above 126 mg per dl and 25.6% had Hba1c (diabetes test)above 6.5.

It was found that the overall diabetes was around 43% higher then the Chennai city`s estimate of around 35% as they have used fasting glucose and or HbA1c and not the glucose tolerance test. As per Dr Anjana Mohan a senior diabetologist the diabesity numbers were so high.
