A mammoth amount of Rs 1543 crores would be used to modernise the MTC bus terminuses in places like Thiruvanmiyur, Vadapalani to Vyasarpadi etc in Chennai.

According to the MD of MTC Mr. Anbu Abraham, multi-storeyed buildings in each of the complexes would accommodate commercial complexes and parking lots on the top floors and ground floors used as deopt with enough busbays, waiting areas for the passengers, toilets and drinking water units etc.

The space in the commercial complexes would be rented out to restaurants, convenience stores and retail units selling fast moving consumer goods or FMCG etc. The superb piece of information is that issues related to SWD asn sewer lines would be fixed and waterlogging would be prevented in the monsoon season.

To rope in private contractors, tenders have been floated in the public-private partnership or PPP mode. For the next 3 decades, the successful bidder would be in-charge of the site. This was announced in the assembly by the transport minister in 2022 itself. More people would use the bus terminus if adequate parking facilities for the 2 wheelers are provided to the public and this was as per Mr. R. Rengachari, transportation activist. He hinted that MTC must take a clue from CMRL in this aspect of providing parking space.

There has been a decline in the economic last mile connectivity and increase in the 2 wheelers now in Chennai city. In this situation, it is highly necessary to develop transit hubs with enough parking space. By this, there would be more ticket revenue plus increase in the non farebox income too. Bitter truth is that MTC has been facing several hundred crores.

A resident from Vyasarpadi mentioned that the people would shift back to MTC buses once the bus terminus gets modernised.  Absence of amenities has made many to shift to metro rail here is known.
