Over 4,000 shops and roadside vendors in Chennai had their plastic items seized as part of an inspection campaign by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The crackdown took place over 20 days, with 17,884 commercial shops inspected in total. The highest amount of banned plastic items was seized in the Royapuram zone, with 430 kilograms confiscated and fines totaling Rs 2.13 lakh.
The Teynampet, Kodambakkam, and Adyar zones also saw significant seizures. The public has been urged to support efforts to create a plastic-free city by avoiding banned single-use plastic products.
