As per the usual procedure, only the authorized constructions are charged to pay Property Tax by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Property taxes are collected twice a year!
Presently, around 13 Lakhs Property Owners have been paying the Property Tax in Chennai Metro City.
As such, the Greater Chennai Corporation earns a revenue of Rs. 1400 Crores each year!
However, there are areas such as the unoccupied open land owned by the State Government, and the banks of the water-bodies. Rivers, the areas which were once part of the water reservoirs but with new constructions in these areas, amounting over 100 locations, where tens of thousands of houses have been constructed!
20000 unauthorized constructions!
With the status above, it is now learnt that the Greater Chennai Corporation has now decided to COLLECT PROPERTY TAX FOR THESE UNAUTHORIZED CONSTRUCTIONS AS WELL!
The Greater Chennai Corporation Officials shared in this regard:
"Over 20000 full-fledged constructions exist in these unauthorized and state-owned lands! It is now planned to college Property Tax for these unauthorized constructions!
The related proposal has been sent with required documents to get approval from the State Government of Tamil Nadu!
Once the approval is received, the above plan of collecting Property Tax for unauthorized construction will be implemented!"
