The need for a permanent place for the ration shop has been the major demand from the residents belonging to Velachery in south Chennai now. The residents have urged the govt to remove all the croachments in the locality. The ration shops are now located at the rented places in this locality and due to this the residents walk nearly 2km to get the essential items from the ration shops. This has been creating issues for the residents.Truth is that their ration shops shift from one place to another place as they are present in the rented place.
It must be recalled that a ration shop located at Dhandeeswaram Main Road was shifted thrice and due to this the consumers found it difficult to get their provisions etc. Residents from Tansi Nagar, Annai Indra Gandhi Nagar, VGP Selva Nagar, Bhuvaneswari Nagar etc would have to walk at least 2km to go to the ration shop located in the locality. This was according to Mr. M. Balakrishnan, general secretary, Tansi Nagar Residents Welfare Association.
The government space in Velachery has been occupied by some illegal buildings. Six culverts near the Perungudi railway station were blocked by the encroachments earlier. In the NE monsoon season, the culverts prevented inundation. The buildings were evicted after many complaints from the residents. Now, many encroachments have come up in Velachery and they have been making the lives of many residents difficult regarding approaching the ration shops.
It was brought out by a resident that a complaint was filed and no action has been taken till now. The complaint letter was sent to the revenue dept, zonal officer of Greater Chennai Corporation etc. It is learnt that the local body officials have asked the residents to identify a place to shift the ration shop for the convenience of the residents.
