As there are more incidents now regarding stopping trains by pulling the chains, the railway administration has decided to create more awareness among the passengers.

It is important to mention here that SR or Southern Railways has 6 railway divisions namely Chennai, Madurai. Trichy, Salem, Palakkad and Trivandrum. Every day, as many as 1303 trains, electric and 650 MEMU trains are operating. These trains carry about 22 lakhs of passengers daily. The train passengers pull the chain during the incidences of fire or theft or train derailment etc.

In recent times, there has been more incidences of train chain pulling activity from the passengers for silly reasons. The reasons for pulling train chains are trying to get back the mobile phones that have fallen, for making relatives and friends (who have got down) to get back again inside trains,  to give back the lost items etc. Passengers pull the train chains even if they board the wrong trains.

It must be noted that against those who pull the train chains for silly reasons under the Section 141 of the Indian Railways Act 1989, a case could be booked and Rs 1000 or one year imprisonment could be imposed. It is learnt that 2573 cases were booked in 2022 against those train chain pullers and 2547 persons were arrested. A total  of Rs 15.39 lakhs were collected as fine. It is shocking to note that when compared to the number of train chain pulling cases from 2019 to 2022 the number of cases were more last year.
