Think twice before venturing into the sea hereafter!!

The news that has come out is that the doctors at RGGGH in Chennai have cautioned the public regarding venturing into the sea as the hospital received 2 patients with sea snake bites last week. They have added that incase of suspected bites after venturing into the sea, the people must take immediate treatment.

Muscle pain, stiff muscle and elevated muscle enzymes were witnessed as symptoms of the sea snake bite in the 2 patients aged 12 and 33. This was according to Dr. Ragunathan of RGGGH.

On 25th March, the RGGGH received a 12 year old boy with severe myalgia and highly coloured urine. Truth is that the boy developed an acute muscle breakdown that could lead to renal failure. The boy was subjected to forced alkaline diuresis to prevent renal failure. It must be noted that the doctors at RGGGH suspected a sea snake bite. This boy was playing on the beach shore at Kanathur on the ECR in Chennai a night before and was bitten by a snake.

In the other case, on 29th March, a 33 year old man went to the beach near Kovalam and was bitten by a sea snake. He showed symptoms like shivering, palpitations, jaw tightness etc. The tests conducted on him at RGGGH showed elevated muscle enzymes. He was made to undergo alkaline diuresis to prevent renal failure.

The dean of RGGGH Dr. Theranirajan spoke about how the hospital was witnessing patients with sea snake bites after many years. He mentioned that bathing in the sea must be avoided by the public. The kids must be given care by the parents when they play on the sea shore etc. He concluded that ignoring the sea snake bites would be dangerous and immediate medical help must be sought out.
