Starting June 2023, the southern railways or SR is planning to operate premium trains such as Chennai-Bengaluru Shatabdi express and Chennai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat trains along with some other trains at 130kmph speed between Chennai and Jolarpettai. By this, the travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru would be reduced. It is superb to note that 30 to 45 minutes would be saved for the passengers while travelling in these trains. Truth is that the travel time for other trains would also reduce as many trains use the Jolarpet route to reach Bengaluru.
The upgradation of the Chennai-Jolarpet route would also reduce the travel time from Chennai to Coimbatore in the Vande Bharat trains to just 5 hours and 50minutes. As per an officer from SR it was very clear that the premium trains like Vande Bharat trains and Shatabdi express etc would be speeded up. To operate trains at high speeds, the SR would be upgrading railway tracks until Bengaluru. It is now said that the zone is identifying several express trains that go through the route to operate them at higher speeds.
In the previous financial year, SR was able to increase the speeds of 44 trains due to the upgraded tracks. The trains now have been running at an average speed of 30kmph and increase from the previous 15kmph and that was due to the fact that the loop lines of various sectors of SR have been enhanced. From the statement from SR, it was clear that these efforts would also free up some tracks for the freight services.
