Moving from corridor 3 to corridor 5 at Sholinganallur might be little difficult for some passengers!!
The news is that CMRL has scrapped the plans for a line to link these two corridors. Hence, the passengers would have to take an elevator or stairs to switch the platforms at Sholinganallur.
It must be recalled that earlier the CMRL had plans to operate a circular route of 81.3km across 88 stations Madhavaram-Koyambedu-Elcot-Thoraipakkam-Adyar-Madhavaram with trains for every 8.5minutes. In less than 2.5hours, the passengers could go around this route.
Now, in the changed plan from CMRL, there would not be a direct train between corridor 3 and corridor 5 and therefore a passenger travelling from Adyar to Medavakkam and Madipakkam would have to switch platforms at Sholinganallur. It is important to note that in phase 1 passengers could take the trains to the airport from Central through Koyambedu as well through Anna Salai.
The plan for the circular train operations have been dropped because poor ridership was expected on stretches like Medavakkam on corridor 5 to SRP Tools on corridor 3. Poor ridership was also accepted from Adyar on corridor 3 to Alandur on corridor 5.
It must be noted that 45.8km corridor3 links Madhavaram milk colony to SIPCOT at Siruseri and 47km corridor 5 links Madhavaram milk colony with Sholinganallur. It was brought out by CMRL officials that when the footfall increases trains would be operated in the circular routes. An additional line connecting both the corridors would be provided now.
