Overdose of paracetamol for the kids has now caught the attention in Chennai!!

It must be noted that doctors working in the private as well as government hospitals in Chennai have been witnessing overdose of paracetamol for the children. The doctors have warned the parents and cautioned them against exceeding the prescribed dose.

It was brought out by Janani Shankar belonging to Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospitals in Chennai that there has been an increase in the viral respiratory infections in the kids especially adenoviral infections. The kids get affected by high grade fever and the fever would be there continuously for 3 to 4 days and the fever settles won down by 6 to 7 days.

She added that parents give excess paracetamol to their kids. It must be taken into account that when the temp reaches 105 degrees fahrenheit the parents try sponging and give paracetamol for the kids to bring down the temp. To avoid their kids getting seizures etc due to high continuous fever, many parents give an overdose of paracetamol. There are few symptoms like vomiting, drowsiness and enlarged liver etc.

Director, Institute for Child Health, Chennai, Dr. Rema Chandramohan mentioned that the hospital witnesses many kids with paracetamol overdose. This could sometimes lead to paracetamol toxicity. She spoke about how the parents must not get tensed on seeing their kids with mild fever. Point is that temperatures less than 100 degrees fahrenheit must be left alone to subside and no paracetamol must be given. Parents must use a thermometer to check the temperature.
