Many residents belonging to Ambattur in Chennai are unhappy about the private buildings that are constructed near the Karuppan pond located in Sowcar Street. They want the buildings to be removed. They fear that if buildings were not removed then the water body would be gradually encroached upon. The ground water level in the locality would be recharged when the pond gets rejuvenated. Now, the local residents have urged the civic body to do this rejuvenating work.

It was brought out by a resident and civic body activist Mr. Nedumaran that the water body was in poor condition already and construction of illegal buildings around the pond has made the situation worse. Many volunteers from NGOS and residents clean the waste present near the water body. The bitter fact is that the water body here has not been maintained well as many dump garbage and litter the entire stretch.

The residents here demand the eviction of encroachments near the water body or else the people would gradually encroach the water body also. Finally, the water body would not exist also. It must be noted that in Chennai many water bodies have disappeared or don`t exist now.

As per a resident from Ambattur it was clear that the water body was used by many animals and birds to quench their thirst. The water body also helped to recharge the groundwater level in the area. It was concluded by the resident that GCC could also prioritise water bodies just like they do regarding parks and playgrounds etc in Chennai.
