At the Chennai airport, 2 terminals would be functional from July onwards and due to this, persons flying out of Chennai airport would face less congestion. The domestic terminal at the Chennai airport is being used by 42000 to 44000 passengers every day.
It is true that during peak hours many passengers face heavy crowding, long queues and long waiting time for checking in and security procedures etc. It is said that the present international terminal or T4 Would be converted into an additional terminal after modification works. After a month, the international operations would move to the newly inaugurated terminal T2.
After July, airlines like Air India, Vistara, Air Asia Air Asia Express etc would operate from the T4 terminal. From the existing domestic terminal T1 , airlines like Spicejet, IndiGo, Alaska etc would operate. This was explained by an officer belonging to AAI.
It was later mentioned by another officer that the terminal the passenger would have to use would be indicated by the ticket and boarding cards. This would prevent any confusion. Adequate signage would also be there to help the commuters. Walkator or buggies could be used( plying between T1 and T4 terminals) if a passenger reaches the wrong terminal.
By the end of May month, AAI plans to move the international operations to the new integrated terminal. Later on, the modification work on T4 terminal would start. It was revealed by an officer that customs and immigration counters would be removed and food, beverage and retail outlet stalls would be added in June month.
