The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has completed the construction of 366 new toilets across the city under the Swachh Bharat scheme, in a bid to curb open defecation by the public due to the lack of public toilets.
The northern parts of the city will receive more toilets compared to the central and southern parts, with Tondiarpet zone receiving 38 toilets, followed by Thiruvottriyur zone with 28 toilets and Madhavaram zone with 24 toilets. The GCC plans to construct more new toilets in North Chennai during this financial year.
In addition, 215 new toilets and 265 new urinals will be built in different locations in the city under the ongoing projects of the Swachh Bharat scheme for 2023-2024. Residents can contact the Chennai Corporation helpline number 1913 to report any issues related to lack of basic amenities in their area.
