With PM concentrations averaging 102 micro gms per cubic metres a month, Alandur bus depot present in Chennai and in TN is now the most polluted location in 2023. It must be taken into note that the PM concentrations must not go more than 45 micrograms per cubic metres per month.
In addition to this, over the last 4 months PM 2.5 concentrations at Alandur were between 30 and 112 and it should not exceed 15 micrograms per cubic metres. The air quality in Chennai has been deteriorating now and this was revealed by the data on the real time dashboard of NCAP or National Clean Air Programme.
Nine air quality monitors belonging to TNPCB and 3 monitors belonging to CPCB were used to collect data. Since its launch in 2018, the 4 year analysis of NCAP data has shown that PMD concentrations in Chennai were increased in 2019. To make cities in TN like Chennai, Madurai,. Trichy and Tuticorin etc pollution free, TNPCB has submitted an action plan to the central agency.
It is now revealed that GCC has been asked to reduce the road dust by blacktopping all roads in the city and maintain them free from potholes etc. In Chennai, soon, greening of traffic corridors, open areas, and vertical gardens would be increased.
As per Mr. R. Kannan , member secretary, GCC it was clear that in Chennai road dust and silt would be removed by mechanical sweepers, water fountains at major road intersections and development of non-motorised corridors etc have been suggested. It must be noted that GCC has embarked upon a major park renovation and sapling plantation in the last 2 months in Chennai.
Priority would be given to introduction of CNG/LNG buses, e-vehicles adoption plus others like multilayer car parking development, vehicular emissions checking, public transport strengthening etc.
