The Highways Department in Chennai is currently undertaking extensive renovation and beautification works on the iconic Anna Flyover. The project, costing Rs 8.45 crore, involves the reinforcement of all 97 pillars of the flyover with modern ready-made concrete, followed by painting and beautification.
The renovation works also include planting below the flyover, a new coat of paint, extra lighting, and the construction of a pathway for pedestrians. The Anna Flyover, also known as the Gemini Flyover, is a dual-armed grade separator built in 1973 by East Coast Construction and Industries, and considered as one of the top-rated flyovers in the country. It was also the first flyover built in Chennai and the first-grade separator in Asia.
The flyover`s name originates from the nearby Gemini Studios, which was later demolished, resulting in the area becoming known as the Gemini Circle. The renovation works are expected to further enhance the iconic status of the Anna Flyover while also improving the safety and experience of those who use it.
With reinforced concrete and a fresh coat of paint, the Anna Flyover is set to continue serving as a significant landmark in Chennai for many years to come.
