If you are of the view that mangoes could only be eaten, then this piece of article would surely surprise you!!
Leather like material has been developed from mango pulp by some scientists at CLRI or Central Leather Research Institute in Adyar in Chennai. This could be used to make bags, belts etc. This new material from mango pulp could be an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic leather and it has 50% of mango pulp.
The research & development work at CLRI was sponsored by the startup Aamati Green Private Ltd of Mumbai. Point is that yesterday the scientists who have applied for patents transferred the technology to this Mumbai based startup.
Process:
The mango pulp was combined with a biopolymer in liquid and powder form by the team of scientists. Later one, through a simple process, a sheet was made from it. Surface coating was given to the material and design patterns were added. The superb piece of information is that bags and laptop sleeves made from this mango-leather have passed the durability tests. In the future, footwear etc would also be made from this material.
It is a known fact that natural leather has got the best tensile strength and longevity and no materia could compete with the natural leather. This was mentioned by Mr. P. Thanikaivelan, chief scientist at CLRI. He spoke about how products made from PU and PVC leather take a long time to degrade. He concluded that Netherlands was the only country that produces mango based leather like material
