On the 1st of May, which fell on a Monday, it was a holiday, resulting in three consecutive holidays (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday).
As a result, there was a higher number of families and individuals undertaking weekend holiday trips, causing the Koyambedu Bus Terminus to be crowded with passengers.
Additional government buses were operated to accommodate the increased number of passengers.
Passengers who had already reserved their bus travel boarded buses to Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, Thoothukkudi, Thirunelveli, and other destinations without any difficulties.
However, passengers who had not made reservations faced great hardships in securing seats on buses. Consequently, these passengers had no choice but to opt for omnibus travel and reached the omnibus bus stand.
As a result, there was a sudden surge of passengers at the omnibus bus stands. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the fares for omnibus travel skyrocketed. The fare for omnibus travel doubled!
In particular, the fare for travel from Chennai to Thirunelveli was fixed at Rs. 3500/-! This development shocked the passengers. Families planning to travel were stunned and unsure of what to do next due to the sudden increase in bus fares.
The passengers voiced their complaints to the officers about the fare doubling. In response, the Transport officials provided the following information:
"As the school summer vacation has started, and many families have planned trips to their hometowns, additional government express buses are being operated to benefit the passengers.
In addition to the government buses, private transportation companies are also running additional buses. Upon observing the existing crowd waiting to travel, we have ordered additional buses to be operated, allowing passengers to travel with their families.
We have received complaints about the extra fare being charged in omnibuses. Inspections are being conducted on omnibuses to ensure that passengers are not being charged extra for their travel.
We have planned to discuss this issue with bus owners in a meeting presided over by the state`s transport minister. This will help prevent the charging of additional fares in omnibuses!"
