The CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has now taken a measure regarding developing beachfronts in Neelankarai in Chennai. It will be preparing the feasibility report and a detailed project report or DPR for developing Neelankarai beach with a cycle track there. In the future, a similar report would also be made regarding the beach at Thiruvottiyur.
It must be recalled that a few weeks back an announcement was made in the Assembly about developing beachfronts from Neelankarai to Akkarai with a cycle track.
Chennai shoreline renourishment and revitalization project:
It must be noted that the above mentioned beachfront projects are a part of Chennai shoreline renourishment and revitalisation project. The project would be implemented at a cost of Rs 100 crores. Information is that both Neelankarai to Akkarai & Thiruvottiyur projects are pilot projects of Chennai shoreline project.
Between Ennore creek and Kovalam, the Chennai shoreline project was proposed to be implemented.Consultants have ebn invited by the planning authority of CMDA to prepare the reports. For a distance of 5kms, the beachfront development for Neelankarai ro Akkarai would be implemented. For a distance of 3kms, a shoreline in Thiruvottiyur would be developed.
The CMDA minister Mr. Sekarbabu had announced that Rs 20 cr would be used to develop the beachfront from Neelankarai to Akkarai and Rs 30 cr for the development of Thiruvottiyur beachfront. From the document it was clear that access to the beaches is not contiguous and fragmented into stretches. It is noteworthy that Marina Beach and Elliot`s Beach were 2 the most popular of these stretches with a large number of visitors.
In Chennai, there are 20 other disconnected storefronts that have been neglected and decaying because of pollution and lack of infrastructure etc. In future, in addition to cycle tracks, the beaches would also have souvenir shops. play areas, medical facilities, seating facilities, musical fountains etc.
