The Department of Highways has intensified the preparatory activities for a report on the special overbridge project in Chennai Metro City, covering the travel from Chennai Metro City Marina Beach to Guindy in just 10 minutes!
With the main objective of addressing the acute traffic congestion in Chennai Metro City, several project activities have been initiated and undertaken in various locations. As a step towards easing the traffic congestion in important areas such as Adyar, Santhome High Road, and Gandhi Mandapam, the Highways Department has planned to construct an overbridge from the Chennai Metro City Lighthouse Junction to Guindy.
During the presentation of subsidies for the various Government Departments for the year 2022-23 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, State Minister E. V. Velu informed that a detailed project report will be prepared for the construction of an overbridge from Chennai Marina Lighthouse to Guindy, with an estimated cost of Rs. 45 Lakhs.
It is expected that the construction of the overbridge will lead to a significant improvement in the traffic situation in Chennai Metro City.
The roads in Chennai Metro City hold special importance and significance for commercial trading and tourism, necessitating the need to connect different important locations.
Currently, there are numerous residential complexes, schools, colleges, tourist centers, commercial centers, airports, Chennai Metro railway stations, and hospitals, resulting in increased traffic movement in these areas.
Currently, it takes an hour to travel a distance of 9 km from Chennai Marina to Guindy, and during peak traffic hours, it takes 2 hours. Consequently, large numbers of vehicles get stuck on the roads during morning and evening hours. Even when traveling via Santhome, Mylapore, Alwarpet, Teynampet, and Anna Salai to Guindy, it takes a minimum of an hour, and traveling via Santhome, Foreshore Estate (Pattinappakkam), Adyar, Madhya Kailash Junction, and Saidapet to reach Guindy also takes over an hour.
Furthermore, there are vehicles lined up for 2 km at Madhya Kailash Junction, Nandanam Junction, Chinnamalai Junction, and Greenways Road Junction.
To address this massive traffic issue, comprehensive efforts will be made to prepare a detailed report on the construction of a special overbridge from Chennai Marina to Guindy.
A decision has been made to construct an overbridge from Chennai Marina Lighthouse to Kutchery Road, Santhome Junction, Pattinappakkam, Greenways Road, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Bridge, Kotturpuram Railway Station, Kotturpuram Bridge, Maraimalai Adigalar Bridge, Kasi Theatre Bridge, and Manapparai MIOT Hospital.
The proposed overbridge will cover a distance of 14.3 km. The feasibility report for this proposal is currently being prepared. Based on a survey and analysis conducted four years ago, the decision was made to construct a special overbridge connecting these two locations.
Conducting the land survey, traffic analysis, and other necessary assessments for this project is estimated to take approximately six months.
