The Chennai based ICF or Integral Coach Factory produces India`s first indigenously developed 160km semi high speed Vande Bharat train is known. In the future, ICF would be producing a prototype 240km capacity train for Railways.
It is now said that ICF is holding discussions with the Railways Board to produce an intermediate train between bullet train and VB train. According to Mr. KN. Babu, chief mechanical engineer at ICF, Chennai, there is a need now from the Ministry of Railways to see if ICF would be able to produce trains of 240kmph speed in the standard range.
He hinted that this is just in the beginning stage only. He concluded that after final consulting with RB ICF would be taking the challenge of producing 240kmph speed trains as prototypes for Railways in the future. For more than a month now, discussions have been going on between ICF and the Railway board.
It must be taken into account that the width of the coach would be less than that of a VB train. Various features that would be available in the 240kmph speed train are flooring, seating, panelling and other amenities for the passengers etc.
As the train speed would be very high of 240kmph, the 3 phase propulsion electrics would be different in the prototype. In addition to this, the water and air tightness of the coach interiors would be higher standards. The latest technology would be used in making the 240kmph prototype train.
In-house manufacturing:
Since ICF till now had not produced any train of the speed of 240kmph, Icf might engage a consultant and produce the train in-house. The final train would be rolled out in 2 to 3 years once RB gives its approval. In future, many such very high speed trains might be produced and this would be based on the performance.
