Now, at the Chennai airport, the parking fee that is being collected is more than that of the tariff. This has surprised and shocked many passengers.
Instead of Rs 75, the vehicles going to the airport to pick the passengers are now charged Rs 150 for 20 minutes. For 30 minutes, the amount that is collected from the passengers is Rs 225.
In December 2022, MLCP or multi level car parking was opened at the Chennai airport and about 2000 cars and 700 bikes could be parked here at one time. As there were no proper guides to direct the passengers to the parking area, there was a huge confusion after the inauguration of this MLCP leading to traffic chaos and long waiting etc.
Earlier, it was announced by AAI at the Chennai airport that vehicles that come to the airport to pick up passengers need not pay for the first 10 minutes. The AAI made it clear that Rs 75 would be charged upto 30 minutes and Rs 150 for more than 30 minutes. As it was highly impossible for all the vehicles to enter and exit the airport at the same time, all the vehicles paid Rs 75 as parking fee while coming out of the airport. It must be noted that this fee was deducted automatically at the counters through Fastag.
The passengers recently were surprised to find that the parking fee that was being collected from them was more than the tariff. Rs 150 was deducted from their account as parking fee inspite of returning within 30 minutes. They had found that Rs 225 was deducted from their account if the vehicles returned back after 30 minutes.
The passengers were of the view that they must be informed well in advance about the over charge for parking or else it was unacceptable and tariff prepared must be followed strictly.
