Earlier, there were 281 schools under the Chennai City Corporation. Currently, 139 additional schools located near the boundaries of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), which are now under the administration of Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur District, have been handed over to the Greater Chennai Corporation.
As a result, the total number of schools functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation has increased to 410.
Out of these 410 schools, 46 are higher secondary schools, and 35 are high schools. The students studying in these 81 Corporation Schools from the 9th to the 12th standards will be divided into four groups. T-shirts of purple, green, yellow, and violet colors will be procured and distributed to them, as announced by the Chennai Corporation Mayor, Priya, during the Budget Presentation.
To fulfill this promise, the administration of the Greater Chennai Corporation has conducted a count of the students in the 81 high and higher secondary schools studying from the 9th to the 12th standards. According to the count, there are 29,258 students.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has allocated funds of Rs. 62 lakhs to procure the aforementioned T-shirts. The order for these T-shirts has been placed with the Tamil Nadu Textile Corporation.
The Education Department officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) have informed that since the schools have already reopened after the summer vacation, the colored T-shirts will be distributed to the Corporation School students shortly.
