Gone are the days when the month of May used to be the hottest in Chennai!!

This is now the month of June and Chennaites in this June month have been experiencing one of the worst ever summers. The strong westerlies did not allow sea breeze to blow across the land and heat has been present till late evenings now in the city. This was mentioned by some weather experts.  The delay in the onset of SW monsoons has led to an extended summer season now in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu.

Truth is that Chennai is now under the heatwave like conditions and this June is the second hottest ever as per the records. As the Cyclone Biparjoy would be making landfall, SW monsoon could pick up gradually in the coming days. This was pointed out by some meteorologists. There will be hot weather in most places across TN this week.

Yesterday, the temperature crossed 40 degrees in many places like Chennai, Vellore, Madurai, Erode etc and made life very difficult.

It must be recalled that in June 2019, Nungambakkam reported temperatures in excess of 40 degrees for 14 days. Now, in 2023 in Nungambakkam, the temperature crossed 40 degrees for the12th day.

The likely formation of wind shear zone would result in the rains from 18th of June. This was revealed by Mr. S. Balchandran, Additional DDG Meteorology, Chennai. He hinted that from Saturday onwards, there are chances for monsoons to advance in most parts of the south peninsular region.

Between 18th and 20th June, there are chances of heavy rains in isolated places in as many as in 16 districts in Tamil Nadu like Vellore, Kancheepuram, Erode etc. From next week onwards, heat would come down gradually in Tamil Nadu. Based on the localities and distance from the coast, real time heat could be felt.
