Even after 5 years, the construction of a bypass at Thiruporur is not yet complete. This has not stopped the OMR residents and they have already started using this bypass road.
It must be recalled that in 2017 TNRDC announced the construction of two bypasses of OMR at Kelambakkam and Thiruporur at Rs 247 crores. It was planned to open these 2 bypasses by the year 2020 for public use. Thiruporur Bypass was aimed at connecting Kalavakkam and Thandalam skipping Thiruporur junction and the progress here has been very slow. Till now, just access roads portions have been completed.
It must be taken into account that out of 4 or 6 lanes proposed here just 2 lanes have been laid for most portions and the other half is filled with gravel. Despite more chances of accidents taking place, the residents have been using this road without any signages.0
It was brought to light by a resident from Kelambakkam that many skip the incomplete portions and use alternate routes whenever there was traffic congestion in OMR during festivals etc. He then spoke about the absence of proper signages at Padur roundtana and how it was very risky.
According to a resident activist it was clear that many immigrants settled in this part of Chennai and it was the duty of the TN govt to create infrastructure for faster movement.
The ownership dispute between state and Union govt has led to delay in the work for nearly 8 months in 2022. This was as per some officers from TNRDC.
