Tamil Nadu Government Introduces New Breakfast Menu for Students under Chief Ministers Breakfast Scheme

In an effort to provide nutritious meals to government school students, the Tamil Nadu government has released a revamped food menu for the `Chief Minister`s Breakfast Scheme.` This scheme aims to offer breakfast to primary school students in classes 1 to 5 on all school working days. The recent menu update includes a variety of wholesome options such as upma, venpongal, and khichdi, among others.

According to a report in the Press release , the new breakfast menu will consist of the following dishes for each weekday:

Monday: Rava Upma / Semiya Upma / Rice Upma / Wheat Semolina Upma
Tuesday: Rava vegetable khichdi / semiya vegetable khichdi / corn vegetable khichdi / wheat semolina khichdi
Wednesday: Rava Pongal / Ven Pongal with Vegetable Sambar
Thursday: Semiya Upupma / Rice Upupma / Rava Upupma / Wheat Upupma with Vegetable Sambar
Friday: Semiya vegetable khichdi/ corn vegetable khichdi, rava vegetable khichdi/ wheat semolina khichdi

The scheme was initially launched in 1,545 primary schools across the state, benefiting 1.14 lakh students, with an allocated budget of Rs 33.56 crore in the first phase.

Each student will receive approximately 50 grams of rice, semolina, wheat semolina, or semiya as the primary ingredient for their breakfast. Additionally, 15 grams of pulses will be included, sourced locally or from locally grown small grains, along with a serving of sambar containing 100 grams of locally available vegetables. The aim is to ensure that at least two days a week, the breakfast is prepared using locally available small grains, providing students with a balanced and regionally relevant meal.
