Next time, you visit a hotel in Tamil Nadu, then don`t be surprised if you have to shell out more money from your pockets!!
It is now revealed that If the prices of tomatoes, tamarind and dal etc continue to increase, then the hotels in TN would also increase the prices of food items. This was according to Mr. Venkatsubbu, president of TN Hotels Association. He spoke about how the rise in tomato prices has been grabbing many eyeballs now. He added that the slow and steady rise in the prices of tamarind and dsal etc has been making the lives of many hotel owners difficult.
It is important to note that the cost of toor dal or thuvaram paruppu has increased by rs 39 per kilo. Though the rise in tomato prices was expected as it was a sensational occurrence, the rise in the prices of toor dal was surprising. The reason cited for the rise in toor dal prices was due to the central govt operating the cold storage units in many places that allowed the farmers to stock dal and use when there was a demand. This might lead to artificial scarcity. To contain the prices, the centre has announced about the import of toor dal.
Mr. Venkatsubbu explained that the prices might come down but the prices would not reach the levels witnessed in the past. It was later explained by a hotel owner Mr. Udayashankar that tomato chutney was the only dish that can be avoided due to the hike in the prices of tomatoes.
