Currently, 60 percent of the tax payers in Chennai pay their property taxes online. In the last few months, more and more small taxpayers have started using online platforms to pay their property tax. This was confirmed by the data from GCC.
The senior officers from the Chennai Corporation have made it clear that with respect to total value of tax collected nearly half were made through online mode. Truth is that as of October in 2022 just 35% of the property tax payers used an online method to pay their taxes while the rest paid through tax collectors only. The SMS drive regarding paying property taxes has been highly successful now and GCC has been coming out with some new ideas to increase the property tax amount collections.
As per some tax collectors, there are some people in Chennai who are still hesitant to use online methods to pay their taxes. Point is that the taxpayers lose their confidence in the online system when they face issues. It must be taken into note that a property tax payer would lose his or her confidence when the amount paid doesn`t get reflected in the system and when the amount does not get routed back to the payer`s account even after many days.
Subscription option for the payment of property tax would also be introduced soon by the Chennai Corporation. Here, as and when the bill gets generated, the property tax payers could subscribe for automatic deduction of payable amount from their accounts. This would be of huge benefit for the taxpayers as they could avoid penalties and interests when they cannot take time to make their payments. An officer from GCC has confirmed that the number of properties in Chennai that are paying tax have also increased now than in the past.
