The Tamil Nadu State Transport Department has announced that Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state will open on Saturdays to issue driving licenses. This is in response to the large number of pending driving license applications.
The RTO offices that will be open on Saturdays will be those that have the most pending applications. The service will be available to all categories of the public, including applications through driving schools.
The zonal officers of the transport department have been directed to closely monitor the process to ensure that there are no irregularities. Driving schools should not be allowed to take advantage of this initiative. If any irregularities or complaints are received, the instruction to open the RTO offices on Saturdays will be withdrawn immediately.
The Transport Commissioner has also directed the RTOs to issue press releases through the district collectors before starting to work on Saturdays.
This is a welcome move by the state government, as it will help to reduce the backlog of driving license applications. It will also be convenient for people who work on weekdays and cannot visit the RTO offices during the week.
If you are planning to apply for a driving license, you can check the website of the Transport Department to see if your local RTO will be open on Saturdays. You can also contact the RTO office directly to inquire about their Saturday hours.
