The time is short now and GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has been carrying out the road works in the central part of Chennai in full swing now.
Information collected is that since 1st of May 2023 GCC has laid a total of 1093 roads out of 3767 tendered. These include 897 bituminous and 193 concrete roads in Chennai. The total length is 193km of both bus route roads as well as interior roads.
There have been some hurdles from CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board`s work in relaying utility lines. This has not come in the way of GCC and the civic body has been carrying out the road work fast to complete it before the onset of monsoon.
As per an official from GCC, the situation in Madipakkam and Manapakkam were different and must not be compared with the rest of the city. Till now, out of 1389 interior roads that need to be laid in Chennai just 361 roads have been completed. The GCC is now racing against time to complete works on the remaining 1028 roads before 30th September 2023.
The funds for the road works were released in staggered manner only and that was the real reason for road works not being completed in many roads in the city now. This was brought to light by Regional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Sheik Abdul Rahman. It is learnt that in the last 2 months 40km of the road including bus routes and interior lanes etc were laid.
Mr. Abdul Rahman later spoke about how about 18km of SWD work has been going on in nearly 44 roads in Chennai and how the officials have been instructed to finish the works by 15th September. Just a couple of weeks back only work on short vital road stretches began and is going on well now.
