The people belonging to Chennai would not have forgotten the brutal murder of Swathi at the Nungambakkam railway station in June month in 2016. At that time, the senior judge Mr. N. Kirupakaran had requested the High Court of Madras to remove the shortcomings in surveillance in the public places and to ensure safety of the public.
It is worthy to note that the Chief Justice bench has been investigating the public case. The case came up for hearing yesterday, 18th July 2023 in the presence of Chief Justice Mr. VS. Gangapurawala and Justice Mr. Adhikesavalu. The govt pleader Mr. P. Muthukumar appeared on the behalf of the TN govt and spoke about how CCTV cameras are being installed in all the public places where people gather. He added that within a year of the murder incident, CCTV cameras have been installed at about 68% of locations in Chennai. To install GPS in autos and taxis etc, steps have been taken.
At present, installation of CCTVs and GPS devices in public places has been going on and this was informed by the TN government to the Madras High Court.
By this, the safety of the public would be ensured. Later on, advocate Mr. PT. Ramkumar appeared on the behalf of Southern Railways and mentioned about the installation of CCTV cameras at the railway stations etc and how the security measures have been taken.
