The price of tomatoes has come down by Rs. 30/- per kg today (Wednesday, 19th July) and is being sold at Rs. 90/- per kg at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.
Tomato prices had reached their peak throughout the country over the last month. In some states, they were being sold at Rs. 110/- to Rs. 180/- per kg! In some places, the prices even touched Rs. 200/- per kg, leading to incidents of tomato stock theft.
There has been an increasing trend prevailing for tomato prices over the last month in Tamil Nadu as well.
Generally, 60 to 65 Lorries full of tomatoes arrive at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market daily. When the price is higher, 70-75 Lorries are used to bring tomatoes.
However, over the last 1 week, tomatoes have been arriving only in 30-35 Lorries! Due to the reduced quantity of arrival, the price of tomatoes has become higher.
To check and prevent the price increase of tomatoes, the state government of Tamil Nadu has arranged to sell tomatoes, onions, etc., at lower prices in the Fair Price Shops, Farm Green Consumer shops, and cooperative stores. Although this measure has been welcomed by the public, the price of tomatoes remains on the higher side!
As a consequence of the soaring prices, hotels, restaurants, and catering shops have stopped preparing dishes made from tomatoes! The use of tomatoes is severely restricted in households as well!
However, on Wednesday, 19th July (today), on a single day, the price of tomatoes has come down by Rs. 30/- per kg and is now being sold at Rs. 90/- per kg at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. In retail shops, tomatoes are sold at Rs. 100/- per kg.
Local traders informed that as the quantity of arrival has increased, the price of tomatoes has come down, and the prospects are for further price increase and the price of tomatoes may come down by the end of the Tamil Calendar month Aadi.
