For the Union government`s City Beauty Competition, GCC would nominate its best city wards. It is known that there are 200 wards in Chennai and any number of wards can be nominated for this competition.

The main objective behind this was to promote a platform to celebrate and promote efforts of wards and cities across India. This competition was introduced by the union ministry for housing and urban affairs. Those wards that have superb green spaces, waterfronts, heritage sites etc could be nominated.

It was brought out by Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Union minister for housing and urban affairs that the competition was aimed at opening up opportunities for wards and cities to showcase their interventions in creating beautiful public places. He threw light about how the competition would promote conservation of rich traditions and cultural heritage of cities. By this, creating sustainable communities would be possible. Surveying of wards and nominating the best wards would be done by the GCC.
